MS Oosterdam‘s name is derived from the Dutch translation for the eastern compass point, and is pronounced “OH-ster-dam”. Oosterdam is the second in Holland America’s series of Vista-class ships and embraces the latest industry and environmental technologies such as her use of a diesel-electric power plant for optimal energy efficiency and an Azipod propulsion system that maximizes maneuverability.
Oosterdam was officially christened in Rotterdam in 2003 by Her Dutch Royal Highness, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. Her sister ships are Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam.
These Vista-class ships are new generation ships for Holland America, designed to appeal to younger, more vibrant, multi-generational, family-oriented holidaymakers. Not coincidentally, this is the likely market out of Australia with Oosterdam picking up where Volendam left off.
Oosterdam will sail multiple trans-Tasman itineraries during the cruise season down under with a number of exchanges scheduled in Auckland.
Holland America does not allow liquor to be brought onboard the ship and when it is purchased in port or onboard the ship’s duty free shop, it will be retained until the last day of the cruise. Wine and champagne are however allowed, with a corkage fee of USD18.
