Peter Deilmann Cruises was a family-owned business and Peter Deilmann was well known for pioneering luxury river cruising. The MV Deutschland was his only ocean-going vessel and competes with Hapag Lloyd’s Europa for the premium German market. In 2010, despite generating top ratings, the river cruise division was shut down due to financial pressures. Munich-based Callista Private Equity GmbH & Co. KG is currently the majority shareholder of MS Deutschland Holding and the MS Deutschland Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, which owns and operates the Deutschland, the only German-flag ocean cruise ship.
The attention to quality on MV Deutschland’s decor is said to be second to none, boasting a high quality of service which the ship has become known for too.
While the cruise line is sincere in its efforts to lure and cater to English-speaking passengers, the Deutschland is a German ship, marketed primarily to Germans. The primary language onboard is German and entertainment is geared to German tastes. That said, the company maintains a fully bilingual product and offers translations regardless of the minimal number of English-speaking guests onboard.
*** Please note that Deutschland’s 2015 world cruise that included calls around New Zealand has been cancelled.
